1.  Grammar, spelling, and formatting on applications.

Your CV and cover letter, or even your Linkedin profile can be the first impression your potential employer has of you, so it’s important to make sure that your spelling, grammar, and formatting are clear and consistent. Get a friend or family member to look over things if you’re not sure, or have a look at our CV tips and tricks for templates, insights and more.

2.  First impressions matter.

Even if you are having your interview by Zoom or Teams, make sure you are well dressed, visible within the frame, and not doing anything unprofessional like chewing gum or trying to look after kids while you’re interviewing. Also make sure to make time available for the interview, be flexible with your time, you may need to take a longer lunch break or ask for time off to make the interview happen. It’s important to show the hiring team that they have your full attention and you’re taking the opportunity seriously.

3.  Keep the lines of communication open.

If you’re working with a recruiter, make sure to communicate with them! Recruiters often have quick turnover with opportunities, and need to know promptly if you are interested, if you have another opportunity on the table, or if your circumstances change. If you need some time to consider your options, make sure you let them know that you are thinking about what they have offered so they don’t think you’re not interested.

4.  Network, network, network.

Networking is often a buzzword that sounds like suit and tie and handshaking events. That’s not all it is! It’s also asking your friends and family if they know anyone hiring or getting in touch with a Recruiter who can help you find a new opportunity. If you nurture your network, it will always help you in the long run!

5.  Negotiation is power but manage your expectations.

It is a candidate-short market, which means good candidates do have negotiation power, but make sure that you’re not expecting the world of benefits from an opportunity that doesn’t have the ability to provide them. Great options for negotiation are carparks, flexible hours or start/finish times, and training and professional development.

All in all, job hunting can be tricky and seem overwhelming, but with the right tools in your toolbox, and support from your network and professionals like us, you can be settling into your perfect role in no time!
